Alexei Kovalev is a former professional hockey player from Russia. He made hockey history in 1991 by becoming the first Russian player to be selected in the first round of the NHL Draft when the New York Rangers picked him 15th overall. Gifted with an unmatched skillset, the right winger played 19 seasons in the NHL with five different teams. In 1992, he made his debut with the Rangers and helped the team win the Stanley Cup in 1994. “Kovy” joined the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1998, where he played with legends such as Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr. After a brief return to the Rangers, he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in 2004. He revived his career with the Habs, helping the team reach the playoffs in five of the six seasons he wore the Red-White-and-blue sweater and was a fan-favorite in the frenetic market. He finished his NHL career with the Florida Panthers in 2012.
On the international level, Kovalev was captain of the Russian Olympic hockey team at the 2006 Turin Games. He is now the Sports Director for EHC VISP of the Swiss League 2.
