Chris Nilan was a legendary and feared strongman for 13 seasons in the NHL and was one of the Canadiens' most popular players during his 10 seasons in Montreal. A member of the Tricolore's Stanley Cup-winning team in 1985-86, the Boston native also played for his hometown team, the Bruins, and the New York Rangers. After nearly 700 games and over 3,000 penalty minutes behind his tie, Nilan decided to hang up his skates in 1992.
After his hockey career ended, the former forward moved behind the bench as an assistant coach for a few seasons in the NHL and ECHL, but he faced other struggles that weren't solved by throwing down the gloves. Dealing with alcohol and drug issues, Nilan overcame his demons over time and attended numerous addiction conferences in an effort to tell his story to help those who still live with these issues on a daily basis. His story was featured in the 2011 documentary "The Last Gladiators" and is detailed in his 2013 biography "Fighting Back: The Chris Nilan Story".
Back in Montreal for several years, Nilan hosted a daily show on TSN Radio 690 for a decade and now hosts his own podcast, "Raw Knuckles", with guests from the hockey world.
An important member of the Habs family, Nilan made his return to the organization in July 2022 when he was named the official ambassador of the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club.
