Pierre Lavoie is a family father from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean who, struck by the death of two of his children suffering from lactic acidosis, a rare hereditary disease very present in this region, decided to turn these tragedies into a mission for medical research. He began by focusing his efforts on raising awareness of this deadly disease in his part of the province and finding different ways to fund medical research. Considered at the time as a determined athlete who had participated in several Ironman races, he became a committed athlete and created the Défi Pierre Lavoie in 1999 which, among other things, allowed him to raise the funds required to set up a team of researchers at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. In 2003, the research made it possible to identify the gene responsible for lactic acidosis and gave hope to future parents through the invention of a screening test.
A few years later, in 2008, the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie was launched with the mission of: "creating a culture of preventive health in Quebec by encouraging people to adopt healthy lifestyle habits". We are determined to continue to develop the fitness movement, to fight obesity and to increase health prevention. »
In addition to being a formidable competitor, Pierre is a speaker, an excellent popularizer of science and a proud spokesperson. He is an incredible motivator who knows how to transmit his energy to convince people that it is possible to overcome difficulties and challenges by facing them with the right attitude. He alone personifies courage, the power to believe in oneself and consideration.
